How to Borrow

The Center for Wind Energy (CWE) offers several wind and other renewable energy classroom kits for loan to educators.  These kits provide a hands-on learning experience for students to learn about the importance of renewable energy and creating a more sustainable world. With each kit, you will receive the materials to carry out the activity and the included lesson plan. Some kits come with additional resources such as student worksheets and activity extensions.

In addition, the Center for Wind Energy and the office of Outreach and Engagement at JMU have partnered to pilot a STEM Kit Library during the 2016-2017 academic year.  These kits will be available to Harrisonburg and Waynesboro as well as Rockingham and Augusta County.  There are four kits available for loan and they are indicated as STEM kits in the various kit galleries. The kits are:

To request more information about kits in the STEM library pilot program, please contact Erin Johnson at johns3ee@dukes.jmu.edu or 540.568.4224.

All kits are kept at the Center for Wind Energy in Harrisonburg, however our Virginia Wind for Schools Kits are also located at various museums throughout Virginia for easier access. Each information kit will note if the kit is located at places other than the CWE. All Virginia educators are welcome to borrow a kit for a maximum of one month. We require that all kits be picked up for borrow, as we do not have the funds to ship any of our kits.  However, if you are willing to pay for it, we are willing to ship kits.

We ask that any materials used by classrooms be replenished upon returning the kit. The kits will include suggested locations to find the materials diminished from classroom use. We also ask that you help us to gauge the effectiveness of our kits in your classroom by providing a short write-up of your experience including the number of students and teachers reached, challenges and positive aspects of the kit. We appreciate any and all feedback that you provide us so that we can better assist the educators using our kits.

There are many wind energy kits out there and we only have some of these great products available for teachers to borrow.  Below is a list of the many companies that offer wind energy (and solar energy) kits that you may want to purchase for your classroom. You can also just type 'renewable energy classroom kits' into Google shopping and see the results.
